FC Barcelona to sue Spanish newspaper over leaking details of Messi’s contract worth 555 Million Euros

Web Desk:  FC Barcelona has decided it will take legal action against the Spanish newspaper El Mundo for publishing world’s top-ranked footballer Lionel Messi’s contract with the club, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).

El Mundo on Sunday published details of Messi’s contract with the club claiming it was worth up to 555 million euros over four years.

Responding to the publication of contract details, Barca insisted that they were not responsible for the leaks of details but it also has not denied the contents of the report.

The leak of contract and its subsequent publication happened at a time when the club is facing a dire financial situation due to ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Barcelona said in a statement that the FC Barcelona club regretted on the publication as it was a private document governed by the principle of confidentiality between both parties.

The statement further said that the club would take legal action for any damage that may be caused as a result of the publication. The club also expressed full support for Messi especially regarding discrediting his reputation and to damage his relationship with the club.

According to the report of El Mundo, the deal was signed in 2017 by Messi which is the largest deal in the history of at least football. The newspaper said that the instant deal was a colossal contract which ruined Barcelona.

The instant contract is being expired on June 30 this year and before expiration, Messi could end up by collecting a maximum of 555,237,619 euros if he fulfils all the conditions. The report went on to claim that Messi already earned 511,290,052 euros making almost 92 per cent of the possible total.

The report further added that Messi earned 115 million euros just for signing the contract in 2017. It added that the player’s potential bonuses were a 3,548,644 euro reward for winning the Champions League and 2,365,766 euros for winning La Liga.

It is learnt that in coming months Messi would decide whether he would stay at Barcelona or leave the club. He had joined the club as a 13-year-old player and became the greatest player of all the time. Reports suggest that Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain have expressed interest to sign Messi if he chooses to leave.
